The fastest month and the fastest year ever!

24 Dec

24th December 2011 ==> its Christmas Eve , 1 day before Christmas and 8 days before the New year! Time sure flies; to quote an oft-used cliché.

The posts have been down to a trickle these past weeks due to the Economics and Corporate Finance exams, assignments, German exams and a lot of year-end parties. Term1 came to a close on 21st December with a class-dinner at Heidelberg. We walked around the Christmas market, had dinner at an old brewery, partied until the wee hours; that’s how we kicked off our holiday-season.

I can safely say that now I know enough about the 2008-Global Financial Crisis, the Euro-crisis, the Stuttgart-21 rail-project, Net Present value, WACC, ECB, Market-segmentation, Price differentiation, Decision trees, Variable costing vs. Absorption costing and working in multi-cultural, multi-national groups and multi-tasking efficiently. I also know enough about Christmas traditions in Germany, the best glühweins around, the difference between light snow, snow-rain and a snowstorm and best of all, these past 3. months have only reiterated the fact that ‘It is all about the people; always!’ A big Thank you to the fantastic Program Management and staff at MBS, the wonderful Professors and my dear classmates and friends who have made this 1st step of the journey memorable!

Next term, some of our friends leave for Queen’s in Canada and others for Thunderbird, Arizona. Its going to rather strange not having them around; it somehow feels like we all have known each other for ages. We would  of course, be having several exchange students from Queen’s and other institutes visiting us at MBS for 1 or more modules. We are looking forward to having them over and hope that they have a fantastic time at MBS.

Now that Term1 is over, looking back, we wonder how we did it. It all does seem rather overwhelming. Term2 and Term3 currently look rather overwhelming to us and we are wondering how we will manage. But like all things until now, I’m sure that we’ll sail through and never even realize the passage of time.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

Until term2,

Warm regards,

Anita

The fastest week ever!

2 Dec

Next month, this time, we’d already be in the 2nd day of the 1st month of 2011. All right, I’m going to say this at the risk of sounding clichéd ‘ Where does the time go?’. I know that we say this each year but it’s true and how!

Anyways, this week has been among the fastest ever. This is my recipe for ‘The fastest week ever!’:

Ingredients:

  • 2 lectures each of Corporate Finance, German and Economics
  • 1 number each of a Social-event meeting, a company presentation, a group-work submission due next week, a conference and a Stammtisch
  • 3 visits to the Mannheim Christmas market
  • Tonnnes of snow
  • A little sun
  • and most importantly, great classmates

Procedure:

Sort the ingredients in the order of priority, adhere to schedules as far as possible, pay attention in class; have fun as well, don’t over-analyze things, work as a team, utilize your time efficiently and Voila! you have Friday on your plate in less than the blink of an eye.

Expert tips: Dress-up for winter, stay warm, eat right, sleep well, drink tonnes of water, reduce Facebooking!

Serve with a smile! 🙂

By the way, I simply MUST post on group-work and the learnings from it. Honestly, group-work keeps evolving into a being all its own and I can really see the reasoning behind the huge emphasis placed on group-work. Thanks MBS!

And now the weekend will mostly consist of completing the group-work assignment, studying for the upcoming Corporate finance, Economics and German exams, attending a conference where eminent speakers from the world of business will share their insights on how to become better business leaders and meeting fellow-students and alumni at the last Stammtisch of 2010 (read https://blog.mannheim-mba.com/2010/11/07/celebrating-the-festival-of-lights-at-mbs/ to know what a Stammtisch is).

Also, next week, 3 of our batch-mates leave for their 2nd term at IIM-Bangalore (Indian Institute of Management). We’ll miss them tonnes and wish them all the very best! This is the best time to visit India, especially Bangalore, which has the perfect weather this time of the year. So good luck A, R and S! Gute Reise!

Till later,

Anita
